Seminar: Social Dreaming

This seminar introduces the theory behind social dreaming and offers a 'taster' of it as a socioanalytic method. Social dreaming is concerned with dreams and their meaning for social systems—conducted in a matrix rather than a group, where members present dreams, associate and connect to them, and discover new thoughts together. The session will be conducted by Professor Susan Long, who has worked with social dreaming for over 30 years.

Event Information

This seminar will introduce the theory behind social dreaming and provide a ‘taster’ of it as a socioanalytic method. Social Dreaming is concerned with the dreams provided and their meaning for social systems; it is not interested in the dreamers or their personalities. Social dreaming is conducted in a matrix rather than a group. A matrix has the dreamers present their dreams and matrix members then associate and connect to the dreams. The purpose of social dreaming is for members of the matrix to discover new thoughts through the dreams.

The seminar will be held in a confidential setting, open to members questions and comments.

  • 30 minutes of theory

  • 30 minutes in the dream matrix

  • 15 minutes in a dream reflection dialogue with the purpose of social meaning making

  • 15 minutes in breakout groups to discuss the experience

  • 30 minutes all together to further a discussion on the method

Professor Susan Long will conduct the session. Susan has worked with social dreaming for over 30 years in many countries. She worked intensively in the early years with Dr. Gordon Lawrence, the founder of the method.
